Toplu Oyuncuya Screen Savunmaları-Pick and Roll Defense
Toplu adama yapılan screen pozisyonları genellikle iki yerdedir.1-Tepe screen 2-Side screen, yani kenar screen.
3-Screener de toplu oyuncu da dış atıcılarsa;Screener’in savunmacısı pick’i uyarır ve perdeden gelen uzun oyuncuya hard show yapar.
6-Switch ( Adam değişme ) Screener’in savunmacısı toplu adamın savunmacısını uyarır ve ” DEĞİŞ ” der.
Side screen ( Kenar screen ) ; Burada Yönlendirme tekniğini uygularız-Toplu oyuncuyu bi defa screener’in savunmacısı uyarır,pick sağda diye.( Oyun sağ kenardaysa ) Toplu adamın savunmacısı hemen açı alır,ve topu screenden uzağa dip çizgiye yani baseline ‘ a yönlendirir.Screener’in savunmacısı soft help yapar yani aşağıya gömülür ve yardım için bekler.Toplu adam, savunmacısıyla dipten girerken birlikte double team yaparlar.Bu sırada zayıf taraf savunmacıları rotasyona hazırdır.Toplu adam topu geriye screener’e çıkarırken ona en yakın paralelindeki adamın savunmacısı pas arasına girer ve topu kapar.Kapamazsa ve o uzun atıcı değilse show up yapar kendi adamına dönerken, screenerin savunmacısı da adamına yetişir.
Mesela, rakip pick and roll atağında uzun screener pop out yapıp dışarıdan atmayımı seviyor, yoksa içeri devrilmeyi mi tercih ediyor?

Pıck And Roll’ün Durdurulması Ve Bir Eşleşme Bozulmasında Ne Yapılmalı?

PICK AND ROLL’ÜN DURDURULMASI

Defending the Pick and Roll
Always try to disrupt the offense. Pressuring the ball makes dribbling and passing more difficult, and increases the chances of an offensive mistake.
To defend the pick and roll at the wing or centerfield, here are some tactics:Trap the dribbler and go over the screen
Hard show and go over
Pinch, squeeze, or push up and under or through
Trap and aggressively switch the rescreen
Show and go under
Stop the dribbler and go over
Jump out to stop the ball and go through
Hug the screener and go under
Jump and trap the dribbler early before the screen can be set
Defend the roll man with a big-to-big rotation
Note: On the weak side make sure to cover the top, elbow, and box.
Switch pick and roll – you can always switch equal size players
Short-clock situations – switch regardless of sizeI think the most difficult play to defend in all of basketball is the Pick and Roll.
Here are some options to defend against the Pick and Roll.

High Pick And Roll (Quick Slip)
X5 zone up.
X1 fights over the screen
01 dribbles to the elbow for a shot or passes to 02 at wing.
05 rolls to the basket.
Rotation: X5 helps and recovers then quickly picks up 05.
Weakside players help and recover and stay with their individual opponents.High Pick And Roll (Trap)
X1 and X5 trap 01.

01 reverses the ball to 05.High Pick And Roll (Rotation)

05 reverse the ball to 01 and down screens for 03.
X5 steps back and lets X3 go through the screen to assume a denial position against 03.
X2 takes 02 at wing.High Pick And Roll (Hug)

When 05 sets a screen for 01.
X5 hugs 05 and allows X1 to cut behind him.
The “HUG” is another option to help X1 get back quickly to 01.High Pick And Roll (Step Back Get Through)

When 05 sets a screen for 01
X5 steps back and lets X1 to go through.High Pick And Roll (Stop Penetration)

X1 fights over the screen.
X4 zone up and stop 01 to go all the way to the basket.
If 04 rolls to the basket X4 takes him.
X5 stays with 05.
X3 goes over the screen to deny the ball.High Pick And Roll (Repicks)

Step 1
X1 goes over the screen.

X5 hedges and recovers.
High Pick And Roll (Rescreen)

Step 2 >
X5 steps back.
X1 goes under the screen.
Note: On the repicks the dribbler’s defender goes over the first screen. On the rescreen he goes under. Typically the second screen is solid, so X5 zones up and plays centerfield to prevent 05 from rolling to the basket and/or stops 01 from shooting or penetrating. Also X5 can trap 01 with X1High Pick And Roll (Trap and Reverse Pass)

Step 1
X1 goes over the screen.
X4 stops 01 at elbowHigh Pick And Roll (Reverse Pass)

Step 2
Rotation: 01 reverse the ball to 04.
04 is an excellent shooter.
X4 rotates to 04 and contests the shot.
X1 stays with 01 by denying the pass.
Players X2 and X3 assume a pass denial against 02 and 03.

High Pick And Roll (Shooter and Rotation)
Step 2
01 passes to 05.
X4 closes out against 05.
X2 assumes a pass denial against 02High Pick And Roll (Transition Offense)
Step 1
Player 04 inbound the ball to 01.
01 dribbles up the court and passes to 03 at wing then cuts to the ballside corner.
04 screens for 01.
High Pick And Roll (Transition Offense

Step 2
04 sets a pick for 01.
X1 goes over the screen.
03 reverse pass to 01 at top of the key.
Quickly, 05 comes out to ball screen for 01.

Note: 01 likes to penetrate to the basket.

High Pick And Roll (Transition Offense
Step 3
01 goes all the way to the basket.
X1 fights over the screen.
X5 follows 01 to the basket to block the shot.
X2 helps and recovers to 02.
X4 assumes a pass denial against 04.

High Pick And Roll (Transition Offense Top
Step 1
05 inbound the ball to 01.
01 advance up the court.
05 ball screens for 01 at top of the key.
X1 goes under the screen.
X4 zone up.

High Pick And Roll (Transition Offense Ball Screen
Step 2
01 reverse the ball to 05 at top of the key.
05 passes to 03 then ball screens 03 and rolls to the wing.
03 drives to the elbow for a shot.
X5 closeout against 03 to contest the shot.
X3 takes 05.

High Pick And Roll (Last Seconds of the Game)

X1 must go over the screen to prevent 01 from shooting or penetrating.
X5 zone up to stop 01 and if 05 rolls to the basket X5 quickly takes 05.
X2 and X3 stay with their opponents by denying the ball.

Note: When the clock is running out, you can switch regardless of size or trap.

Note: Communication is a must in this situation, X5 has to shout saying “Switch”.

Wing Pick And Roll (Switch)
Step 2
X5 switch again by taking 05 and X1 back to 01.
Note: Make sure that X5 pushes 01 away from the three point line to switch with X1.

SOS Switching Techniques

Switching is an important and integral part of the SOS Pressure Defensive System. Switching can totally disrupt any type of screening offensive flow. Automatic contact switching on all ON and OFF ball screens eliminates hesitation on the part of the defenders, denying quick catches, thus negating the open jump shots coming off screens.
Screen Over Switch are the basic SOS terms used for switching action. First, the defender guarding the screen calls out the word “Screen” to alert their teammate of the impending screen, and then hedges “Over” one stride to block the pathway of the offensive player moving off the screen. For the final action, “Switch” is called out as the defender assigned to the screener switches to guard the offensive player coming off the screen while the second defender switches simultaneously to the player setting the screen.

Screen and Roll Switching Techniques:
SOS “On Ball” switching has two scenarios. One above the free throw line and one below the free throw line. Above the free throw line an aggressive contact switch is executed to deny all quick jump shots and middle penetrations. Below the free throw line, an aggressive trap is utilized near the base or corner checkpoints.

  1. On Ball Screen set ABOVE free throw line extended.
  2. On Ball Screen set BELOW the free throw line extended.

On ball Screen ABOVE Free Throw Line Extended.

Phase 1. Screen.

Defender X4 bumps screen O4 and then hedges out one stride directly into path of ballhander. Defender X3 moves to the inside of screener directly in front of screener forcing screener to go thru his/her body.
Phase 2. Switch

After the aggressive contact switch X4 forces ballhandler to near side or corner checkpoint denying middle penetration or quick jumper coming off the screen. When ballhander stops dribble, X4 assumes a SMOTHER position. Defender X3, after screener rolls to the basket, moves into a SNUGGLE position to deny passing lane form ballhandler.
Phase 3. Smother

X4 assumes aggressive SMOTHER position on the ballhandler to disrupt his/her passing vision into post area. X3 assumes a FRONT position on screener utilizing “slip front” technique.
NOTE: other three defenders move into weakside “I” positions assuming “I” responsibilities in a low semi-flexed stances with vision on ballhandler. Basic SOS rules are in effect.

On ball Screen BELOW Free Throw Line Extended.

Phase 1. Baseline Trap.

X3 pushes ballhandler O3 towards base or corner check points while X5 leaves the screener before screen can be set, traps X3 from baseline area. Low I moves to open screener as screen is set.
Phase 2. Triangle I

X3 and X5 aggressively lock up the ballhandler while the Low I defender moves to the offensive strong side low post player assuming a 3/4 fronting position with other two defenders completing the “Triangle I”.
Phase 3. Closing Out.

On pass out of trap, all play defenders move to the nearest offensive player. All SOS fundamental and “Base Go I” rules are in effect.

Denver Nuggets Pick and Roll Defense vs San Antonio Spurs 4/10/10

Chad Iske–AC Denver Nuggets–Pick and Roll Defense

Golden State Warriors maçında Denver’ın kötü savunmasının ve pick and roll savunma zaafiyetlerinin analizi…

Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors went off in Denver on Tuesday night. Curry dropped 30 points, Jarrett Jack had 26, Harrison Barnes had 24 and Klay Thompson had 21 in a 131-117 Game 2 victory over the Nuggets, the first by a visiting team in Denver since mid-January. It was a remarkable display of shooting and offensive execution.

It was also really bad defense by the Nuggets.

Denver’s defensive strategy was a disaster, as they left shooters open everywhere. In Game 1, the Nuggets thrived by switching many of Golden State’s screens and helping off Harrison Barnes and David Lee to plug dribble penetration. But with Lee out after his season-ending hip injury, the Warriors went to a small lineup, inserting Jarrett Jack into the starting five and sliding Barnes to power forward. That proved to be a masterful adjustment by Mark Jackson because it put more shooting on the floor, making it much more difficult for Denver to cheat off other players to plug the lane.

Even that, though, only explains some of Denver’s defensive ineptitude. The Nuggets committed several fundamental breakdowns, on Curry in particular, that are unacceptable no matter the scheme. We’re going to break down some of the plays you see in this video.
***

For one, the Nuggets’ pick-and-roll defense was horrible. Everyone knows that Curry can shoot from anywhere on the floor, and yet the Nuggets consistently gave him too much room to rise and fire off basic high screens.

On this play, Kosta Koufos gets flattened by a simple screen-the-screener set from Golden State. The Warriors run Harrison Barnes into Koufos to slow him up and give Andrew Bogut space to set a pick for Curry. Notice how poorly Koufos deals with it.

Screen_shot_2013-04-24_at_9

Koufos is trying to cheat over the top of Barnes, which makes no sense given Bogut’s arc to Curry. It seems clear from this picture that the plan is for Bogut to screen for Curry going left, and yet Koufos is trying to cheat by going to Curry’s right.

Sure enough, Koufos is in no position to help Andre Iguodala deal with the pick and roll.

Screen_shot_2013-04-24_at_9

Because of that, Curry gets a wide-open shot that he predictably hits.

Screen_shot_2013-04-24_at_9

Koufos wasn’t the only one to mess up this screen-the-screener coverage. Watch JaVale McGee make the same exact mistake a couple minutes later.

Screen_shot_2013-04-24_at_9

This time, Bogut is coming to Curry’s right, and McGee is fighting over the screen down low by going to Curry’s left. It’s the same thing Koufos did, just on the opposite side. The same ultimate result occurs.

Screen_shot_2013-04-24_at_9

Denver’s big men were slow even without being held off by a second Warriors screen. Notice how slowly Kenneth Faried reacts to this side pick and roll in the second quarter.

Screen_shot_2013-04-24_at_9

Faried’s slow initial reaction ensures that Iguodala again has no help on Carl Landry’s screen. Faried rushes to make up the gap, but in the process, he gets himself off-balanced, opening his stance and leaving himself vulnerable to a Curry crossover.

Screen_shot_2013-04-24_at_9

Sure enough, Curry makes his move, leaves Faried in the dust and creates room for an open jumper.

Screen_shot_2013-04-24_at_9

****

Many of Denver’s problems were even more fundamental than this, though.

On this play, the Nuggets get caught with Faried guarding Curry on a switch. This isn’t the worst thing in the world, but that’s only if the Nuggets cheat off other players to shrink the floor and limit Curry’s options. That’s what Corey Brewer is supposed to be doing when he positions himself off Richard Jefferson and near Curry.

Screen_shot_2013-04-24_at_9

Jefferson is running harmlessly to the opposite corner, where there’s already a lot of traffic. So, why does Brewer follow him and lose sight of the ball?

Screen_shot_2013-04-24_at_9

That gives Curry more space to work, and he uses the threat of the drive to cross up Faried and nail the jumper.

Here’s another fundamental error by Denver. The Warriors try to milk the Harrison Barnes/Ty Lawson mismatch, but Lawson pushes Barnes far away from the hoop. Nevertheless, the Nuggets double-team Barnes, for some reason.

Screen_shot_2013-04-24_at_9

The Warriors react appropriately. Andrew Bogut cuts to the basket, forcing Andre Miller to leave Curry to stop a potential dunk. That, in turn, forces Iguodala into the impossible task of guarding both Curry and Klay Thompson beyond the arc.

Screen_shot_2013-04-24_at_9

Barnes eventually beats the trap and finds Curry in the corner, and this is practically a layup for him.

Screen_shot_2013-04-24_at_9

Finally, I’m really not sure how Lawson lost Curry in transition on this play, but that’s obviously a major problem.

Screen_shot_2013-04-24_at_9

Curry sneaks along the baseline, and by the time Lawson recognizes what he’s done, it’s far too late.

Screen_shot_2013-04-24_at_9

Screen_shot_2013-04-24_at_9

****

Why did all these breakdowns happen? There are a few theories one could throw out. With regard to strategy, the Warriors have rarely played small with Barnes at power forward, which makes it difficult to create a sound defensive gameplan in the short term. With regard to execution, perhaps the Nuggets, a young team in a high-pressure spot, got discouraged by Golden State’s hot shooting early in the game and let it affect their play.

But the good news for Denver is that many of these fixes are simple. The Nuggets don’t need to significantly change their approach to stop the Warriors at home and steal back control of the series. They just need to concentrate and avoid bad breakdowns like these.
